Vince Lombardi came into the picture just as the decade ended. The turnaround was quick and impressive. By 1960, the Green Bay Packers were once again in the championship game. They lost the game to Philadelphia.
Bart Starr would go on to lead the team in their two Super Bowl victories. Lombardi drove the team to championship status over the next nine years. He left Green Bay to work with the Redskins. Phil Bengston took over for one season, and Dan Devine followed Bengston.
The 1970's and most of the 1980's were a disappointment for Green Bay Packers fans. Year after year, the team would do no better than eight wins. In 1989, the Packers ended the season with a 10-6 record, but missed the playoffs.
Most fans know that the 1990's became the glory decade for the Green Bay Packers. Mike Holmgren would lead Green Bay to two Super Bowl appearances, and many playoff victories. The legendary Brett Favre lined up as Quarterback for 16 seasons, and Green Bay fans came to expect a playoff berth nearly every year.
In the past eight years, Green Bay stumbled. This included a 4-12 season with Favre at the helm. This turned around quickly. Brett Favre and Mike McCarthy drove the team to the NFC Championship game for the 2007 season. Sadly, that's as far as it went for Green Bay. Favre retired, to the surprise of many fans.
Aaron Rodgers now lines up under center. The first season without Favre was troubling, but those troubles came on the defensive side. Mike McCarthy hopes to shore up the defensive woes, and Green Bay Packers fans wish for a playoff appearance for 2009.
