Born in the early 1970s, the Milwaukee Admirals were affiliated with many leagues, had many name changes, and numerous team logos. Through it all, the team remained a staple of Milwaukee sports. First called the Milwaukee Wings, the team started as an amateur club and played mostly for fun. The Wings were renamed soon after Erwin J. Merar bought the team and changed the name to the Milwaukee Admirals. The team continued to play club until 1973 when the team joined the new and exciting US Hockey League. In 1976, they won the championship for the USHL. Continuing to evolve, the Admirals went on to join the International Hockey League to become more serious in the eyes of fans and other teams. They remained members of the IHL until the dissolution of the league when they joined the American Hockey League, the league that they still currently play in. In 2004, the Admirals won their very first Calder Cup and by 2005, the team were bought by a organization of investors that includes the owner of the Milwaukee Brewers, Mark Attanasio, pitcher Ben Sheets and assistant general manager Gord Ash.
Success followed after this deal when the team won the division title for the AHL for the second time in 2006. With all of the great progress the team had made, they revealed their newest logo and color change to reflect the revived spirit of the team. The color scheme changed from the blues and reds to black, white and baby blue and their brand new slogan, "Never Say Die".
