The Minnesota Timberwolves are the professional basketball team representing Minneapolis, MN and are members of the NBA. NBA basketball re-emerged in the Twin Cities in 1989. The team was originally one of the four new expansion teams and was returned to its original ownders, Marv Wolfenson and Harvey Ratner to play in the 1989-90 season. Their new name the "Timberwolves" came from the "Name that team" contest conducted in Minnesota to pay homage to their large population of timberwolves. After their first season, the team finished sixth in the Midwest Division and drew over 1 million fans to the Metrodome, which is an NBA record for attendance. The Metrodome also hosted the 3rd largest crowd in NBA history with 49,551 fans on April 17 of 1990 when the Timberwolves lost in a hard-fought last home game against the Denver Nuggets.
After their first season, the team switched venues and played at the Target Center where they won 29 games. During this time there was much change with leadership, first firing head coach Bill Musselman and then moving on to ex-Celtics coach Jimmy Rodgers who led the team to finish with the NBA worst 15-67 record. After seeing these hard times, the Timberwolves recruited former Detroit Pistons GM Jack McCloskey to hopefully show Minnesota some of the success he had in Michigan but even with excellent first round selections such as Christian Laettner and Isaiah Rider, he was unable to re-create his "Detroit bad Boys" success in the Twin Cities.
After playing mediocre at best, the Timberwolves uped the ante when they chose Kevin Garnett in the draft in 1995 and Flip Saunders became the coach. During Garnett's time with the team, he was recognized as one of the brightest rising starts in the NBA, particularly in the late 1990s. Timberwolves tickets started to move in big numbers. Garnett had an average of 18.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Other star players of this era were Stephon Marbury who averaged 17.7 points and 8.6 assists per game. Lead scorer Tom Gugliotta was also a great contributor to the team during this time.
In 2007, the Timberwolves reached a deal to trade their All-Star player Kevin Garnett to take home 5 new team members from the Boston Celtics, two first-round draft picks and also cash considerations. The team did some major rebuilding starting in 2007 and have since unveiled a new logo and new uniforms in 2008 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the franchise.
