Summerfest History

Former mayor Henry Maier came up with the concept of Summerfest in 1968 after visiting Munich, Germany's Oktoberfest.  He wanted a similar festival in Milwaukee.  Initially, Summerfest was held at venues all throughout the city of Milwaukee.  In addition to music, Summerfest hosted other events such as an air show, movies, and a pageant.  It was not until 1970 that the festival was moved to its current and permanent location, the Henry Maier Festival Grounds.  For over forty years, Summerfest has occurred the last week of June through the first week of July.  The fourth of July always falls under Summerfest.  Lucky concertgoers might even catch a glimpse of Milwaukee's fireworks.  All Summerfest goers can witness Summerfest's own firework show on opening night, The Big Bang.
