More Info
Don Nelson was at the helm of the Bucks during their most successful and consistent era. During the late 70’s to mid 80’s, Nelson led the Bucks to seven seasons of 50 wins or more, in addition to earning two Coach of the Year awards.
Nelson also established his philosophy of “small ball” during this time, using a lineup of small and quick players to create mismatches for other teams to play against. This system was especially fun to watch for the fans.
He also implemented the use of the “Point Forward” for the first time, in which the Small Forward would assume the ball handling duties and setting up the offense, much like a Point Guard would.
During his coaching tenure, Nelson would be known throughout the league for his innovative and unorthodox coaching philosophies. Following his time with the Bucks he had coaching stints with the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks.
