Royal Terence Ivey was born December 20, 1981, in Harlem, New York City and attended Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens, New York City.
Ivey’s college career started at the University of Texas in Austin. In his freshman season, head coach Rick Barnes asked Ivey to play point guard. Meaning more playing time, Ivey agreed and that season he averaged 15.8 minutes per game, 2.8 points per game and 1.7 assists per game. Considering Ivey had never played the point guard position, those stats were impressive.
One year later, 2005 Bucks teammate, T.J. Ford joined the Longhorns as a point guard and Ivey was able to move back to shooting guard. His points per game went up from just 2.8 a game to 10.9 per contest.
As a junior, Ivey's stats dropped slightly, averaging 7.9 points and 25 minutes per game, but the senior still helped the Longhorns to advance to the Sweet 16 in 2002 and the Final Four that season. After Ford was gone, Barnes had to turn to Ivey as his point guard again. He left the Longhorns being the school's all-time career leader in games started (126).
After he graduated from Texas, earning his degree in elementary education, with a minor in social work, he was a second round draft choice and 37th overall pick for the Atlanta Hawks in the 2004 NBA Draft.
At a mid-September camp, his hustling play during his workouts with other free agents impressed the Bucks. And after three seasons with the Hawks, Ivey signed a one-year contract with the Milwaukee in September 2007. He had a breakout game with 15 points, two assists and two steals in just 15 minutes against Cleveland on November 20, 2004 in a 111-107 Bucks victory.
