More Info
As a college athlete, Sidney Moncrief helped to resurrect the struggling Arkansas college program in the 1970’s. He scored over 2000 points as a Razorback. His scoring total stood as the school record up until 1995.
In 1979, Moncrief was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round. His impact on the team was immediate, as the Bucks won an additional 11 games the first season that he walked onto the court. By 1982, Sidney won honors as Defensive Player of the Year. He held on to that title for the next season as well.
His offensive play nearly doubled in year number two, where he averaged over 14 points per game. By his third year as a Buck, he was averaging nearly twenty points per game.
Sidney made five All Star appearances consecutively. The Bucks made ten playoff appearances while he wore the uniform. The Moncrief led team also won seven division championships. During that time, Sidney was considered one of the best all-around players in the NBA.
When 1988 season rolled around, Sidney was feeling the pain of various injuries. His numbers dropped along with his playing time. He ranked second behind Jabbar in scoring, second in assists as well as games played. He was the best free throw shooter the Bucks have ever had. He left the NBA for a single season, and was lured back to play for the Hawks for one year.
Both Arkansas and Milwaukee honored Sidney by retiring his jersey.
